Enjoying the pool

Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Pools? Here’s What You Should Know

Imagine it’s a sunny, warm day and you are hosting a backyard cookout. The kids are playing in the pool, the music is on, and everyone is having a great time. Then someone slips on the wet concrete and gets hurt. What happens next?

If you own a pool, or are planning to install one, this is a scenario worth thinking through. Pools bring plenty of fun, but they also increase liability and may raise questions about your homeowners insurance coverage.

At Avanti Insurance, we want to help you understand how pools are covered, what risks they carry, and how to protect yourself and your guests.*

Pools Are Usually Covered, but with Limits

In most cases, homeowners insurance covers pools under Other Structures Coverage, which typically includes things like fences, sheds, and detached garages. Coverage B often provides up to 10% of your total dwelling coverage. However, it usually only protects the structure itself; not damage from things like wear and tear or poor maintenance. How your pool is classified (above-ground or in-ground) can also affect how it’s insured.**

Pools Can Increase Liability Risk

A backyard pool can be a great source of fun, but it also comes with added responsibility. If someone gets injured in or around your pool — even if they weren’t invited — you could be held financially responsible.*

Most homeowners insurance policies include personal liability coverage, but the standard limits might not be enough to fully protect you. That’s why many pool owners choose to raise their liability limits or add an umbrella policy for extra coverage.

Safety Measures Are Often Required

Owning a pool means more than just enjoying the water with friends and family and stocking up on fun floaties. It also means following important safety requirements. Many cities and counties have specific pool safety laws, so it’s essential to check your local regulations.

Some common pool safety features homeowners may be required to install include:

  • A fence at least four feet high with a self-closing, self-latching gate
  • A secure pool cover or a pool alarm system
  • Non-slip surfaces and clear, visible warning signs

Meeting these safety requirements can help prevent accidents and protect your guests. It’s also important to know that failing to follow local pool safety laws could affect your ability to file a homeowners insurance claim if an accident happens. Always check with your city or county to make sure your pool meets all necessary regulations.

What to Consider if You Have a Pool or Plan to Add One

Whether you already have a backyard pool or are planning to install one soon, it’s important to make sure you’re properly protected. Here are a few steps homeowners often take:

  • Reviewing their homeowners insurance policy to better understand pool coverage
  • Speaking with an insurance agent about personal liability limits
  • Asking if an umbrella policy could offer extra protection
  • Checking that their pool area meets all local safety laws and requirements

At Avanti Insurance, we’re here to help you worry less about the what-ifs and spend more time enjoying the pool.
